Interesting point. Japanese dictionaries such as weblio and goo list 貼る similarly to this, as a subentry to 張る. ie

https://www.weblio.jp/content/貼る

17 (「貼る」とも書く)のりなどでくっつける。「びらを—・る」
18 (「貼る」とも書く)板などを平らに並べて打ちつける。「羽目を—・る」

So 貼る should be used for the meanings for pasting of things together, or affixing flat boards together.  For the other meanings you should use 張る.

There is one other point though which explains why they are listed together and not as separate meanings.

貼 was not originally part of the Jouyuu kanji (the official list of Kanji taught to secondary school students), it was added in when the lists were revised in 2010.  Up to then, even though it was commonly used, in media where Kanji was restricted to the Jouyuu Kanji 張る would have been used for the meaning to paste things together.

Now, here is a difficult one to correct:

The entry says that there are the following English meanings for 張る:

1. to stick; to paste; to affix

2. to stretch; to spread; to strain; to tighten; to put up (tent)

It also notes that 貼る is an alternate written form for 張る. In fact, 貼る relates to the first entry and is a different word (homonym). 張る mostly relates to the second translation.
