Flint that seems a good tip at least for remembering, I also read that many kanji got simplefied in modern times and thats why the stroke order seems weird, maybe that is the reason.

I read somewhere that the reason for this is that stroke orders tend to go in a pattern of horizontal, vertical, horizontal and so on.  So because the third stroke in 右 is vertical, and the third stroke for 左 is horizontal, the first two strokes end up in a different order between the two kanji.

I don't know how true that is, but its a good way of remembering the correct order.

How come hidari has different steoke order than migi?
