I am trying to find where the name chari come from. 25 years ago it was jitensha. Is chari an improvment ?

From what I could find it It's probably an onomatopoeia. "Chari" is an abbreviation of "charinko". And "charin" sounds like a bicycle bell.
I think "jitensha" is still more popular though.
