Other common counters(杯、冊、台、階、回)

In this lesson we will learn about some more counters which are commonly used(杯、冊、台、階、回).

Counter for cupfules(杯)

The ~杯「~はい」counter can be used for cups or glasses of drink (coffee, tea, soft drinks, juice, water, beer etc), as well as for bowls of soup.

Note on pronunciation

  • 一杯 is pronounced「いっ・ぱい」
  • 三杯 is pronounced「さん・ばい」
  • 六杯 is pronounced「ろっ・ぱい」
  • 八杯 is pronounced「はち・はい」or「はっ・ぱい」
  • 十杯 is pronounced「じゅっ・ぱい」or「じっ・ぱい」
  • 百杯 is pronounced「ひゃっ・ぱい」
  • 千杯 is pronounced「せん・ばい」
  • 一万杯 is pronounced「いち・まん・ばい」

Counter for books(冊)

The ~冊「~さつ」counter can be used for books, magazines, memo pads, or any bound volume.

Note on pronunciation

  • 一冊 is pronounced「いっ・さつ」
  • 八冊 is pronounced「はっ・さつ」or「はち・さつ」
  • 十冊 is pronounced「じゅっ・さつ」or「じっ・さつ」

Counter for machines and furniture(台)

The ~台「~だい」counter can be used for furniture (tables, chairs, beds, benches), electrical equipment (microwaves, mobile phones, computers), and vehicles (cars, buses, trucks, but not train carriages and planes).

Note on pronunciation

There are no special pronunciation rules for ~台.

Counter for floors of a building(階)

The ~階「~かい」counter is used to count floors of a building. The ground floor is considered to be the first floor(一階)in Japanese.

  • 一階 is pronounced「いっ・かい」
  • 三階 is pronounced「さん・かい」or「さん・がい」
  • 六階 is pronounced「ろっ・かい」
  • 八階 is pronounced「はち・かい」or「はっ・かい」

The ~回「~かい」counter is used to count occurences or how many times something happens.
