My name is Leland Bryant Ross, and I was given the Japanese name Haruo (春男) by my first Japanese teacher, whose name I don't remember, at the Japanese Community Center in Seattle in 1966. In Japan I was generally called Rosu Haruo, ロス春男 (although I think the school officially had me listed as Rasu Rirando, ラス・リランド), but I wanted a kanji family name, especially since I was from Seattle, not LA (ロス is the common Japanese abbreviation for Los Angeles), and I settled on 呂須. It doesn't mean much; "spine necessarily" is sort of gibberish as Japanese surnames go; but it is a name for a somewhat notable person in Chinese antiquity, usually written 吕媭 (see https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/吕媭 .)
