I was just wondering, how does a typical Japanese write a diary....
...do they write in polite or casual forms?
...or they just use what they prefer, whether polite or casual?
...do they use the top to bottom or the left to right?
...if any one have gone across in to this, please let me know. ^^

Pretty sure they write in plain form, since there is no need to use -masu/desu form when just talking to yourself.
Ex: 生きててよかったな・・・ (it's good to be alive) - instead of 生きていてよかったですね。
Think of what their thoughts sound like...they would just use the most casual/plain/simple speech rather then longer formal speech.

And I think they use left to right, but I'm not 100% sure so check on that one.
Also, articles (newspapers, wikipedia, etc) and official things like that are written in plain form as well.

The copy I have of Aya Kito's diary (which the 1 litre of tears drama is based on) is in plain form. There are some photocopied extracts with her actual handwriting and that is written left to right.

Why is it such a bad thing? Is it for a grade?

I will just have to continue writing in polite form then, I have no choice, I have started it this way so it will be this way until the end.......thanks you so much for responding in this thread though the site seems at little bit quiet recently...... ^^
