Shikkari shite （しっかりして）

I've seen this phrase used often in anime with the translation being "Hang in there!" or "Hold on!"

I tends to come up in a scene with a character in a serious condition like fainting or possibly dying.

And is しっかりして what is actually being said or have I heard it incorrectly?
