Just want to say that as an American native English speaker, we never say "boyfriend" or "boy friend" for a male friend. That only means 彼氏(かれし/boyfriend/male romantic partner). For a male friend you could say "male friend" or "guy friend" (latter is kind of colloquial). I see this mistake a lot out there, and it's unfortunately on tanoshiijapanese, too. Love this website though!!

Also wanted to add that girls are different, because they occasionally call each other girlfriends without any romantic/sexual implication. Boys don't do this - that I know of.
