The difference between 一つ and 一 Is one a counter for something specific and the other something else? I enjoy this website; however I can't fully understand what all these different counters are. Will someone explain the differences?

Counters are for specific types of objects, but 一つ二つ三つetc. are general and can be used for anything. An example of some specific counters are 一人(HITORI) for people or 一枚（ICHIMAI) for flat objects. 一is just the number one.
